摘要🧓🏻：Given a surface fibration over ℂ of genus , the semistable reduction theorem asserts there is a finite morphism  so that the base change of over admits a semi-stable model. The smallest degree, denoted by , of all such is called the stable index of . An interesting question is to give a uniform upper bound of   only depending on . In the 1980s, Xiao Gang had given such an upper bound and asked whether his bound is optimum. In this talk, we will give the optimum upper bound of   for HYPERELLIPTIC and show that   for infinitely many . In particular, we show that Xiao’s upper bound is optimum for infinitely many . This is a joint work with C. Gong, J. Lu and P. Pollack.
